Artist Statement

With this semester being my final photography class I'll be taking in high school, I took a lot of time reflecting both figuratively and literally. In the figurative sense, I took the time to do the projects I've always dreamed of doing like a print exposed through soda and purposefully scratching negatives, but also going back through my previous rolls and printing pictures that I did not have time for before. In the literal sense,  Albatross Around Her Neck, where I have my friend, Lindsay Trout, staring at her reflection contemplates the difference between perception and reality. By combining this shot with the two types of photography I shoot (Polaroid I-Type and digital), illuminates the different ways the different ways we or even the world perceive ourselves. The negative thoughts we have of ourselves really isn't how the world sees us, so it's important to be gentle to ourselves. The common thread through my work lies along that line. The way we see the world is an active choice. You can choose to stay hurt and stay bitter or you can find peace and see the world in a positive light. Romanticism is a virtue when life gets hard, so much of my work focuses on the beauty, the light, the hope.
